<p>A process for the preparation of phosphorus compounds by the reaction of phosphorus trichloride with a volatile carboxylic acid (e.g., acetic acid or propionic acid), wherein an excess of the carboxylic acid is employed at a temperature maintained below the boiling point of the reactant mixture, followed by removal of chlorine containing compounds is disclosed. The resulting mixture, which comprises phosphorous acid, the anhydride of said carboxylic acid, and mixed anhydrides of said carboxylic acid and phosphorous acid can be converted to anhydrous phosphorous acid or used to prepare aminomethylphosphonic acid.</p> |
