A laminated material is obtained by applying to one or both surfaces of a foundation layer a layer of plastics material containing a finely divided substance, removing the substance from the free surface of the plastics layer by chemical action to leave a pitted surface, and plating or metallizing a metal layer on to the pitted surface. The foundation or reinforcement sheet may be of fibrous material impregnated with a plastics material or a plasticsbonded glass fibre or fabric or a sheet of metal. The plastics may be an epoxy resin. The plastics material may be treated mechanically or chemically to ensure that the finely divided substance is uncovered before removal. The finely divided substance may be chalk of particle size half-10 microns present in the proportion of 25-35% by weight of the plastics material. It may be removed by the action of dilute hydrochloric acid. The metal layer may be of copper or nickel and the coated sheet may be immersed firstly in a solution of stannous chloride, then a solution of palladium chloride and finally in the plating solution. Ultrasonic vibration may be provided at each of these three stages. The base layer may be roughened or anodized before application of the plastics layer.
