PURPOSE:To form an image of high quality by controlling the discharge of a polar solvent from a polymeric gel by the supply of a current. CONSTITUTION:A transfer medium 112 composed of a water-containing polymeric electrolyte gel layer 116 is arranged between a pair of electrodes 114, 122. A current is supplied across a pair of the electrodes 114, 122 on the basis of image data to selectively discharge water to the outer peripheral surface of the gel layer 116. Oily ink is supplied to the transfer medium 112 to which water is discharged from an ink roll 110 containing an oily ink liquid to be transferred to the part where no water is discharged of the gel layer 116.
