The ivention relates to the determination of the inertial characteristics of a solid body (S) in a reference frame (Rs) connected with the solid body, in particular polar moments of inertia, inertia products, coordinates of the centre of mass (inertia). The solid body (S) to be studied is rigidly connected to a vertical spindle (4) oscillating on a fixed frame (1) and elastically restored by a "couple system" (7, 8), the frequency (f) or period (T) of oscillation being measured and analysed in order to obtain the inertial parameters. Successive measurements are taken in various configurations: axes (xs, ys, zs) of the reference frame (Rs) brought successively to coincide with the oscillation spindle (4), then bisectors of the angles of the reference frame (Rs) brought to coincide with this oscillation spindle, finally translational shifting of the solid body (S), over a chosen length, relative to some of the above configurations, these measurements making it possible to obtain all the aforementioned inertial parameters. <IMAGE>
