The invention relates to uniform distribution of a fuel/air mixture in the cylinder and, in particular, to the concentration of the mixture in the vicinity of a spark plug (16) in the cylinder, in particular by selecting a direction of supply for the fuel (23) sprayed, thereby improving the ignitability of the mixture in lean combustion operation. The invention furthermore aims to generate turbulent flows in the cylinder in order to accelerate combustion and implement lean combustion operation thereby reducing the fuel consumption and the quantity of exhaust gas. Before atomisation, the fuel (23) injected by an injection valve (21) collides with an inlet valve (14). The atomised fuel flows into the cylinder from the side of the inlet valve (14) nearer to the fuel injection valve (21). In addition, high-speed air streams emerging from bypass ducts (10) enter the cylinder from the sides of the inlet valve (14) closer to the spark plug (16) to generate turbulent flows in the cylinder. <IMAGE>
