The invention relates to a hydraulic power-steering device for motor vehicles having a hydraulic actuating cylinder (4) which interacts with the steering mechanism (3) of the steerable wheels, and having a steering valve (6) which interacts with the steering shaft (2) and via which hydraulic fluid is fed from a hydraulic source (9, 5) as needed either to one or other of the working chambers (4.3; 4.4) of the actuating cylinder, depending on the direction of the affected steering torque. In order to improve the active safety of the vehicle and to confer on the driver a better sense of the driving behaviour of the vehicle at the stability limit (when cornering), a device is provided which is in the form of a mechanical bypass valve (8, 8'), responds to the vehicle transverse acceleration, counteracts the coming-into-effect of the hydraulic power-steering assistance and has a valve body (8.1) which acts as inert mass, is arranged in a bypass line (10, 10') which is preferably arranged at the exit, but optionally also at the input, of the steering valve (6), and the valve body of which can be automatically moved from its rest position blocking the bypass line (10; 10') counter to the action of prestressed spring devices (8.2, 8.3) due to the effect of transverse forces acting upon it. <IMAGE>
