A pulsed power linear actuator (10) provides increased stroke force by converting rotational kinetic energy into linear kinetic energy through the use of electrical energy. The kinetic energy may be established by placing a tube (16) having endless conductive loops (17) therein between an armature (30) and stator (24). Rotation of the tube (16) by a motor (14) generates rotational kinetic energy which is converted to linear kinetic energy and transferred to the stroke arm (28) when current is applied to the armature (30) to generate magnetic fields. The relative motion of the armature (30) and tube (16) exposes the loops (17) to the electromagnetic fields and produces an electromotive force which induces current in the rotating endless loops (17). The induced current reacts with either the time invariant magentic fields (in the permament magnet configuration) or the electromagnetic fields (in the multi-segment configuration) to cause a transfer of energy from the rotating tube (16) to the stroke arm (28).
|
