Apparatus for distributing and diffusing a gas in a liquid medium optionally packed with granular material, in particular air within a granular medium immersed in a liquid intended to undergo a biological purification treatment therein. It comprises at least one manifold, on the one hand connected to a source of pressurised air and, on the other hand, connected to a set of tubes (25) provided with a plurality of air distribution orifices (26), each tube being equipped with a plurality of air diffusion boxes (28), each arranged facing one of the said air distribution orifices (26), and the said boxes themselves are provided with air diffusion openings (30) in regions at a distance from the said air distribution orifices.
