PRODUCTION OF OPTICAL FIBER

PURPOSE:Preform prepared by a specific method is covered with a quartz jacket and then made into fibers, thereby preventing the moisture absorption of the dopant and producing low-cost optical fibers with increased strength in high productivity. CONSTITUTION:Fine particles of glass 4 are laminated on starting material 3 by spraying them onto the rotating material 3. The laminated layer is grown in the radial direction while the composition is distributed annularly by changing glass particles in turns in accordance with the distance from the center to form a cylinder of glass particles 5, which is then sintered to give a cylinder of transparent glass (preform) 13. The preform 13 is inserted into pipe jacket of quartz glass 14 and they are heated from the one end by passing through high-temperature furnace 15 (about 2000 deg.C), molten, combined, and immediately drawn into a fine fiber 16.
