PURPOSE:To obtain a squalene which is a raw material for a squalane useful as an oily raw material for a cosmetic by culturing a protozoan belonging to the genus Euglena in a nutrient culture medium and collecting the squalenes from the resultant culture. CONSTITUTION:This method for producing squalenes is to culture a protozoan belonging to the genus Euglena (preferably a variant strain SM-ZK of Euglena gracilis) in a nutrient culture medium and collect the squalene from the resultant culture. Thereby, the squalene, squalane or sterol (ergosterol, sitosterol, cholesterol, etc.) is obtained with good productivity. |
