PURPOSE:To provide a sheet material supply device of retard separation type which can improve separation performance and durability. CONSTITUTION:Since a sponge retard roller 51 is formed by a material having smaller hardness than that of a feed roller 6 and the shape of a nip section becomes a recessed shape on the sponge retard roller 51 side when the feed roller 6 is pressure-contacted with the sponge retard roller 51, tips of transfer paper sheet 2 are shifted in the shape of tiles when a plurality of transfer paper sheets 2 are fed into the nip section by a pick-up roller so that the tips of all the transfer paper sheets 2 which are fed in can come into contact with the sponge retard roller 51 directly. Consequently, it is possible to separate various transfer paper sheets 2 having different thickness and friction coefficient securely by the sponge retard roller 51.
