Method and device for determining the effectiveness of a skin protection agent in vitro, in which the agent to be examined is applied and conditioned in a defined, adjustable layer thickness on an inert plastic membrane and stretched in full-surface contact with an underlying dry indicator support in a thermostatic measuring cell, in which the permeation of the pollutant from a drop applied onto the sample in a defined manner or a thoroughly mixed pollutant stream through the sample to be examined and the support membrane can be followed under measurement, in that the change in the indicator, caused by the pollutant, is indicated by suitable analysis methods and evaluated with regard to the break-through time, the break-through rate and the break-through intensity in the form of empirical skin-protection factors for hydrophilic and hydrophobic pollutants. <IMAGE>
