1,160,194. Bowden mechanisms. MORSE CONTROLS Inc. 14 Feb., 1968 [22 March, 1967], No. 7281/68. Heading B7E. [Also in Division E2] A control device (e.g. a Bowden cable) has a shaft 26 mounted for axial and rotary movement, a housing 19 for said shaft having a generally elliptical surface on the interior thereof with opposed apogees and perigees, said shaft having diametrically opposed generally curved surfaces 39, 40 and being slidable axially of said generally elliptical surface when the medial axial plane through the opposed generally curved surfaces of said shaft is oriented in the axial plane containing the apogees, said shaft being restrained against axial translation when said shaft is rotated to bring said generally curved surfaces thereof into engagement with opposed portions of said generally elliptical surface between said apogees and perigees. As shown, the shaft is connected to a core 12 of a cable in a manner to permit relative rotation, the end portion of the cable being fixed to a swivel cylinder 28 which is received within a hollow cavity 29 in the end portion of the control shaft 26, the cylinder being maintained against axial displacement by a washer 30 and an end crimp 31. The housing is connected to a casing 13 for the core. A handle is connected to the free end portion 34 of the control shaft. The degree of curvature of said generally elliptical surface and said curved surfaces preferably differs by no more than 7 degrees at their point of engagement. |
