The invention relates to a component, for example a beam (support), a nozzle, a spring such as a leaf spring or a helical spring, an impeller or the like. In order to configure said component in a variable manner as regards its handleability and, as far as possible, also its mechanical properties, the invention proposes that a chamber (1, 12, 14 to 17) be formed in the component or resting against the component, preferably with a small thickness or depth, for example in the form of an elongate gap cavity, and that the chamber be filled with an electro-rheological liquid, preferably one with a high flow limit, and that means be provided in the component in order to provide the chamber with an electric voltage. <IMAGE>
