<p>Disagregin is a unique fibrinogen receptor antagonist isolated from the tick Ornithodoros moubata. Disagregin inhibits fibrinogen binding to platelets, and thus platelet aggregation, by binding to subunits of the fibrinogen receptor, glycoproteins IIb and IIIa. It is a 60 amino acid peptide which lacks both the arg-gly-asp(RGD) and lys-gly-asp sequences and has no homology to other regions of fibrinogen. It is useful in inhibiting the formation of the initial hemostatic plug which forms at the site of an injury.</p> |
