Deprotonation of a cyclopentadienyl deriv. comprises reacting a Grignard reagent with the deriv. in an inert solvent to form a dianionic magnesium halide salt of the deriv.. The solvent contains 0.5-1.5 equivs. per equiv. of the deriv. of an ether selected from cyclic ethers and acyclic polyethers. The ether is pref. THF. The cyclopentadiene deriv. is (C5Me4H)SiMe2(NH-t-Bu) and the dianionic salt of the deriv. is (MgX)2((C5Me4)-SiMe2(N-t-Bu)).THF, where X is halogen.
