It is known that it is possible to examine quality properties of parts using ultrasound waves. Examination is carried out on samples specially prepared for this purpose, and also by continuous means using sonic wheel heads which are in frictional contact with the part. The subject matter of the invention is the manner in which the measurement signals can be employed for unambiguous characterisation of the material properties and their variations. For this purpose, the entire transfer function of the ultrasound wave propagation is used, in particular by recording and then using velocity and attenuation as a function of frequency.
