PURPOSE: To provide a folding device for automatically folding laundry flatwork, eliminating difficulties in folding laundry flatwork different in thickness. CONSTITUTION: This folding device has a longitudinal folder 1 and a transferse folder 2 connected to the outlet side of the folder 1. In the transverse folder 2, there are two laundry conveyors 5, 6 disposed one behind the other in the conveying direction 3 of a flatwork article arriving from the longitudinal folder 1, and the conveyors 5, 6 are spaced apart by a gap 7 extending over the whole width of the transverse folder 2. A laundry flatwork article 4 to be transversely folded is led into the gap 7 to make a first transverse fold using a folding blade 16. Prior to this step, the thickness of the flatwork article 4 to be folded is inputted to a data input device, and the width of the gap 7 is adjustable depending on the particular thickness of the flatwork article. Optimum conveyance of the flatwork article 4 having a first transverse fold is therefore achieved along the gap 7 regardless of its thickness.
