The centrifugal pump is used as a blood pump. It has a housing (10) forming the pump chamber (13) which has an inlet (11) and an outlet (13). The pump chamber encloses an impeller (15) which is equipped with vanes (14) and is mounted on bearings (17). The bearing system supports the impeller (15) so that a gap (21) is formed between the impeller and the housing (10). This gap is filled with a special fluid supplied from a source (30). A sensor (33) senses the boundary between the special fluid and the blood and controls the pressure of the fluid source in order to keep the boundary between blood and fluid in a defined position. USE/ADVANTAGE - Blood pump, with impeller supported in a fluid bearing with separate fluid to reduce friction and minimise damage to blood.
