The object underlying the invention is to improve an apparatus of the type characterised at the outset to the extent that floating or settleable substances in liquids are separated without further mechanical effort. This object is achieved according to the invention by the liquid flowing so as to be rapidly calmed into a closed vessel, separating off due to the clarifying effect and can be removed separately from the apparatus solely by the liquid pressure.
