HYDRAULIC TURBINE, WICKET GATE, AND RUNNER APPARATUS

Wicket gates (128) and axial flow (106) or mixed flow (176) runner blades for a hydraulic turbine are provided. The wicket gates are arranged circularly around a central axis (X-X) and the gates are pivotable about pivot axes (Y-Y) parallel to the central axis. Each wicket gate has a trailing edge shaped to present a discharge angle (B) that varies from the bottom of the gate to the top of the gate. The shape of the runner blades is a function of the shape of the wicket gates such that the whirl value for fluid flow at substantially every point exiting the runner blades is between about zero and a value that is less than the change in whirl from the inlet to the exit of the runner.
