A compensating element (10) is installed with an essentially vertically arranged frame (16). If an electric motor (34) is driven, a ball-spindle shaft (38) is rotated about its own axis and displaces a table mechanism (42) in an essentially perpendicular direction. At the same time, a cylinder in the frame is operated in order to move a piston (64) essentially vertically. Here, magnets on the piston and magnets in the table mechanism are magnetically attracted by one another so that the table mechanism (42) is pulled in the same direction as the piston (64). The load on the electric motor (34), which is loaded with the weight of a workpiece carried by the table mechanism (42), is accordingly reduced.
