Electromagnetic linear accelerator

An electromagnetic linear accelerator is described which is suitable in particular for use as an electrical cannon, having a rail on which the object which is to be accelerated is arranged displaceably and can be ejected at the end of the rail. The linear accelerator according to the invention is distinguished by the combination of the following features: - The accelerator consists of a plurality of partial accelerators which operate in series and are largely autonomous and in which part of the magnitude of the total energy which is achieved on exit is in each case transferred to the object to be accelerated. - A magnetodynamic store (MDS) with a current converter provides the electrical energy for at least one part of the partial accelerators. As a result of this combination of features according to the invention, a linear accelerator is obtained which has a high firing rate and muzzle velocity with comparatively low weight.
