PURPOSE:To obtain a new anti-tumor substance, composed of a glycolipid, extracted from viscera of a sea urchin with an aqueous solvent and having a specific value of molecular weight measured with a molecular sieve, having inhibiting activities against the cell proliferation with low toxicity and suitable as an anti-tumor medicine. CONSTITUTION:This new anti-tumor substance is obtained by immersing an enteric canal of a sea urchin such as Strongylocentrotus intermedium (A. Agassiz) in acetone for 2 days, defatting the enteric canal, air-drying the defatted enteric canal, providing dry powder of the enteric canal of the Strongylocentrotus intermedius (A. Agassiz), then adding distilled water to the resultant powder, homogenizing the prepared mixture, centrifuging the obtained homogenate, affording a supernatant, subsequently making the supernatant adsorbed by an adsorption chromatographic column filled with active carbon, eluting the adsorbed substance with methanol, then evacuating and removing the methanol, dissolving the resultant substance in distilled water, fractionating ingredients according to a gel filtration method, screening the prepared fraction according to inhibiting activities against the cell proliferation using a malignant transformant cell strain of a fibroblast derived from a rat fetus and collecting an active fraction. The anti-tumor substance is composed of a glycolipid, extracted from viscera of the sea urchin with the aqueous solvent and having about 2000 + or -500 molecular weight measured with a molecular sieve. |
