The the image input unit comprises; an image translating means for generating digital image data corresponding to each picture element and having a predetermined gradation against the images of documents containing both characters and pictures; a binarization means for processing the image data into simple binary coding; a control means for producing mode control signals corresponding to the scanning mode differently selected according to the documents and generating more than one region value designated on the documents; a count means for counting the number of picture elements, sub-seans and lines according to main seans so as to divide each designated region as many as the region values; and a mixed mode translating means for selecting and producing one of the binary data of the count means, the simple binary data and the dither binary data of the binarization means.
