In the case of awnings which have been known hitherto, two pivot-out opening-out arms are opened out of their vertical initial position with the aid of a torque arising from a leg spring or a gas-pressure shock absorber. According to the invention, use is made of an energy accumulator for pivoting out the arms, which energy accumulator cannot be seen from the outside and, to the greatest extent, is maintenance-free. An energy accumulator is set up in the interior of the tubular opening-out arms. It preferably comprises a prestressed helical spring, of which the tensile force is converted, via a retaining device, into an opening-out torque. Vertical awning for covering windows on the outside.
