PURPOSE: To provide a polymer latex capable of being incorporated into a gelatinous layer at a high concn. while maintaining satisfactory scratch resistance. CONSTITUTION: Polymer latex having <500μm average particle size is incorporated into an emulsion layer or other hydrophilic layer. The polymer latex is obtd. by subjecting one or more kinds of radical polymerizable monomers to radical emulsion polymn. in the presence of a water-soluble polymer represented by the formula and the resultant emulsifier-free homopolymer or copolymer has <65 deg.C, preferably <30 deg.C glass transition temp. In the formula, Z is -CH-CR<1> R<2> -, etc., M is H, Ma, etc., A is OM, OR<3> , etc., R<1> is H or CH3 , R<2> is H, optionally substd. 1-6C alkyl, etc., R<3> is 1-4C alkyl, (x) and (y) are selected so as to regulate the wt. average mol.wt. of the polymer to 5,000-500,000 and the ratio of x:y is 1:4 to 1:1.
