PURPOSE:To attain reversible data compression so as to be coincident with original index data completely when the data are reproduced. CONSTITUTION:When index data from a color lookup table (CLUT) 1 are compression-coded by an orthogonal transformation device 5, a quantization device 6 and a run length encoder 7, data from the quantization device 6 are decoded by a local decoder 8, the decoded index data and the index data fed from the CLUT 1 are fed to a comparator 3, and the operation shifting bits of the index data from the CLUT 1 at a shifter 2 based on a comparison output from the comparator 3 is repeated till the comparison output from the comparator 3 is zero and the index data with a bit length when the comparison output is zero are compression-coded and the result is outputted.
