<p>Title cpds. esp. suitable for prodn. of polycarbonates, are produced by reaction of phenols unsubstd. in the posn. para to the OH group with propyne and/or allene at elevated temp. in the presence of H2SO4 and mercuric ions. The reaction is effected continuously with recycle of mother liquor, and the water introduced with the reactants is bound as anhydrous H2SO4 by addn. of the corresp. amount of SO3-contg.
