Method and device for programming a locking code for a locking system, in particular of a motor vehicle. In a known procedure for programming a locking code for the locking system of a motor vehicle, the initial code programming takes place by means of a programming device simultaneously into a lock-side control device for controlling a locking mechanism and into at least one key-side transmitter which activates the control device under remote control. This leads to a high logistic expenditure if the transmitter and control device are produced at different locations. With the new method and the new device, the code is initially programmed in advance into the at least one transmitter and subsequently, using an external signal input which contains an authorisation code, a code-learning mode is activated in the control device and then the transmitter code is transmitted to the control device which tests, with reference to this code and the authorisation code, whether it is an acceptable programming and, if this is the case, stores the code received by the transmitter and assigns it specifically to the respective transmitter.
