Light transmitting or reflecting surfaces are coated by spraying or spreading out a coating material specif. a glaze contg. a rare earth metal cpd. onto the surface to be coated, or diffusing the article to be coated in a coating material contg. the rare earth metal cpd. and bonding the coating material to the surface by drying or fusing. Used for coating glass and ceramics, e.g. glass for optical purposes. Uniform firmly bonded coatings are obtained without use of sublimation under reduced pressurre.
