An antenna assembly (100) for a radio (280) includes an antenna shaft (106) which is translatable between a retracted position and a protracted position. The antenna shaft is translatable through a support tube (15) which is affixed in position with the radio. A detent (156) engages with the antenna shaft to maintain the antenna shaft in either the retracted or the protracted position.
