Toothpastes and tooth gels containing sodium bicarbonate and an alkali metal pyrophosphate salt dissolved in an aqueous sorbitol solution inhibit the formation of tartar. The toothpastes and tooth gels contain conventional ingredients such as thickeners, anti-caries agents, flavoring agents, and/or sweetening agents.
