PURPOSE: To improve a conventional ratchet locking type or balance weight type safety apparatus by operating a cramp assembly between a disengaged and engaged conditions with a solenoid assembly to grip a seat belt, and by preventing withdrawal of a belt from a retractor assembly. CONSTITUTION: A safety apparatus 10 includes a lap belt 14 and a shoulder belt 16 which are connected to a tongue 18. A retractor 22 is disposed on a back 24 of a seat 12. The retractor 22 tensions and pays out a belt 16. In the event of vehicle deceleration above a predetermined amount, a solenoid 132 operates a cramp assembly 28 to grip the belt 16 and prevents paying out of the belt 16. A control assembly 142 houses a sensor that responds to vehicle deceleration, and a sensor in the control assembly 142 actuates a switch to excite the solenoid assembly 132 when the vehicle deceleration is greater than a predetermined deceleration. The sensor in the control assembly 142 responds to the same rate of the vehicle deceleration as a sensor 54 in the retractor 22. |
