The invention relates to a mechanical general-purpose press, which combines the advantages of a crank press, a knee press and a cam press. The press includes a carriage (7) which is mounted on a frame (1) to permit vertical sliding and has an upper press die which is mounted on its lower surface, a pair of sliding blocks (10) which are mounted on the left and/or right lateral section of the frame to permit horizontal sliding movement, a pair of connecting rods (14), comprising one left and one right rod which are pivotably connected to one sliding block in each case (10) at one end and are pivotably connected to the carriage (7) at their other end, a drive shaft (16) which is rotatably mounted on the frame (11) and is connected to a flywheel (19) at one end and a ribbed cam (23) which is mounted at the other end section of the drive shaft (16), the ribbed cam (23) having a circumferential section which is held between the cam follower (11) and the cam roller (12) which are respectively mounted on the two sliding blocks (10) so that the two sliding blocks (10) are made to reciprocate to the right and left in a symmetrical fashion.
