In a digital copier, a facsimile unit, a scanner, an image storing device or a similar device, an image processing device is appropriately equipped for the purpose of reliably identifying confidential or secret documents which are to be protected against unauthorised persons. The confidential or restricted documents are provided with restriction patterns which are printed or copied over their entire area. The device prevents image data which represent this type of document from being improperly copied, transmitted, stored or input.
