Disclosed are substituted 6,11-ethano-6,11-dihydro-benzo¢b!quinolizinium salts of the formula: <IMG> (wherein R1 is hydrogen or substituent, R2 is hydrogen, alkyl, cyano or alkoxycarbonyl, R3 and R4 are hydrogen or alkyl or together form cycloalkyl or alkylidene, R5 and R6 are (substituted) phenyl or (substituted) 5- or 6-membered monocyclic or 9- or 10membered bicyclic heterocyclic ring or together form a fluorene ring, or R3 and R5 and/or R4 and R6 together form a bicyclic ring system, R7 is hydrogen or substituent, and X- is anion), pharmaceutical compositions containing them, and methods for the treatment or prevention of neurodegenerative disorders or neurotoxic injuries utilizing them.
