PURPOSE:To provide an optical coupling device which is formed by integrating different two optical function elements and more particularly plural optical devices, optically couples these optical function elements at a low loss and is easily produced. CONSTITUTION:The optical coupling device which optically couples the optical function devices of the structures different from each other at a low loss includes at least one piece of optical waveguide cores 101 which are gradually changed in width or thickness in the propagation direction of light, a first clad region 102 which is constituted to enclose the cores 101 and a second clad region 103 which is constituted to enclose this first clad region 102. The magnitude of the refractive index of the second clad region 13 is smaller than the magnitude of the refractive index of the first clad region 102. The width w1 at the light incident end 106, the width w0 at the light exit end 107 and width wc1 and thickness tc1 of the core of a taper length L are so adjusted that the confinement of incident light 104 is intensified. |
