An interface (200) for connecting a local input device (95) to a host (100), such as a telephone message receiving unit. The interface (200) transfers data serially from the local input device (95) to the telephone message receiving unit (100) for print out or facsimile transmission thereby. Control of the interface (200) is governed by a state machine having several states.
