A shredder operating by the rotary-shears principle is equipped with two tearing shafts which rotate counter to one another and are each provided with separate drive units. It is thus possible to equip such a shredder, designed as a slow-speed unit, either with uniformly driven tearing shafts or else with tearing shafts which run at different rates, with the result that the drawing-in effect of the two tearing shafts can be increased or varied in a specific manner. Extremely different types of materials can thus be drawn in and comminuted in an effective manner, the arrangement of a screen or other devices also making effective classification possible, with the result that a very uniform end product can be achieved. The rotor cutters arranged on the tearing shafts may be provided with one or two teeth or else also with self-rotating straight-shank chisels, with the result that a very wide-ranging application area can be catered for by such shredders. <IMAGE>
