PURPOSE: To retrieve a document in response to a natural language input column by constructing a series of inquiries from a phrase obtained by analyzing and retrieving the natural language input column, and ranking documents retrieved from a text total body in response to the inquiries. CONSTITUTION: Supporting hardware including a calculation processing node 4 is driven in response to a question inputted from a user through a user interface 7 to a primary inquiry constructing subsystem 10. An information retrieving subsystem 11 returns documents retrieved from a text total body 12 to the primary inquiry constructing subsystem 10 in response to the inquiry from the primary inquiry constructing subsystem 10. Then, the subsystem 10 detects noun phrase, title phrase, and main verb of an input column, executes a series of inquiries constructed through the procedures of continuous widening and narrowing arithmetic operations based on the retrieved phrases, ranks the documents retrieved form the text total body 12 in the order of certain relation with the question in response to the inquiries, and provides the rank it to the user.
