A method of, and communication system for, transmitting messages, such as paging messages wherein in order to enable a network operator to provide additional facilities to dedicated users, a primary or base station (PS) transmits an address code word which is concatenated with a field comprising indicia indicative of a facility being provided by the system, which field precedes a data field. A secondary station or selective call receiver (SS) on detecting the indicia adapts itself to make use of the facility provided.
