The subject matter of the invention is a method for measuring the density variation of gases by optical means using a gas-density sensor, consisting of a measuring head and an evaluation and control device. The measuring head contains an optical emitter, a measuring chamber (3) and a signal-acquisition unit. The optical emitter (2) emits a measuring-light beam (2) which diverges sufficiently weakly and passes through the measuring chamber (3), while being displaced parallel to the original beam direction as a function of the gas density, since the measuring chamber (3) has two optical windows, arranged parallel to each other, in the form of plane-parallel plates, which are inclined with respect to the measuring-light beam by a particular non-zero angle. After it has passed through the measuring chamber (4), the measuring-light beam strikes the signal-acquisition unit (5), which is designed in the form of a linear array of optical fibres, the linear array being arranged in the beam-displacement plane in such a way that each individual fibre is struck perpendicularly by the measuring beam. <IMAGE>
