The invention relates to a method for determining urine on the basis of the index component NH3 which is converted into NO in a combustion, UV or redox catalyst and then fed into an ozone stream of constant concentration. The gas-phase titration which then takes place leads to a decrease in the ozone concentration, which is measured using UV absorption at 253 nm. Sensitivity and detection limits show the advantage over known detection methods using chemoluminescence reactions. The transition from the IR to the UV measuring technique exhibits a considerable economic advantage in addition to the advantage in connection with measurement procedures.
