The invention relates to cyclopropyl and cyclobutyl derivatives of the formula I <IMAGE> in which MG is a mesogenic group, A<o> is a)1,4-phenylene, in which, in addition, one or two CH groups may be replaced by -N-, b)1,4-cyclohexylene, in which, in addition, one or two CH2 groups may be replaced by -O- or -S-, c)naphthalene-2,6-diyl, piperidine-1,4-diyl, thiophene-2,5-diyl, thiadiazole-2,5-diyl or 1,4-cyclohexenyl, where the rings in group a) may be monosubstituted or polysubstituted by halogen or CN, and the rings in group b) may be substituted in the 1- or 4-position by CN, and m is 1 or 2, with the proviso that, in the case where m = 2, the mesogenic group contains at least two rings, and to the use thereof as components of a liquid-crystalline phase for electro-optical displays.
