In order to allow a radio communications device (10) to communicate both voice and high speed data information over a voice channel (12) of a radio frequency link, a radio communications device (10) is arranged to ignore one or more of key de-bounce (44), synthesiser (54) set-up time and squelch (24) when operating in a data operating mode, whereby response time of the radio communications device (10) in the data operating mode is reduced and a rate at which data is communicated over the voice channel may be increased. During data communication the band width of the device is increased by selectively short-circuiting the splatter filter, de-emphasizer circuit or squelch circuit. |
