PURPOSE:To obtain a hydrophilic polymer by subjecting the unsaturated double bond of a polyisoprene or a natural rubber to epoxidation in a specific proportion and opening the epoxy ring thereafter. CONSTITUTION:A polyisoprene or a natural rubber of >=10,000mol.wt. where >=80% unsaturated bond is cis 1,4-bond is heated under the existence of the third amine such as a pyridine, a picoline, a quinoline, or the like and a carboxylic acid having <=10C after 5-60mol% unsaturated double bond of said polyisoprene or natural rubber is subjected to epoxidation, thus obtaining a hydrophilic polymer. With respect to opening of the epoxy ring, 5-60mol% epoxy ring is opened on a basis of the unsaturated double bond of materials before epoxidation. The polymer obtained in this manner is hydrophilic (water-soluble in some cases) and has the unsaturated double bond internally and can be used for applications to a paint, an adhesive, and paper or the like, and this polymer can be used while using effectively features (photosensitive property, giving of rubbery properties, hardening due to thermal cross-linking, etc.) which conventional water-soluble high polymers do not have. |
