In order to connect boards, preferably mitred boards, firstly the mitre faces are cut on the boards and then longitudinal grooves with a dovetailed cross-section are made in the mitre faces of the two boards which are to be connected to one another. The boards to be joined together form, in this case, a groove pair which is held together by a common clamping strip to be inserted from the board end. The clamping strip has, in this case, a double-wedge profile consisting of two wedge profiles diverging in a mirror-inverted manner with respect to one another in relation to the board mitre faces. In order to produce a simple joint which can be fabricated quickly and is easily adaptable to the particular circumstances, it is proposed to produce the flanks of the dovetailed cross-section of the longitudinal groove one after the other in time and with a spatial longitudinal offset on the mitre face of the board. In the same operation, the mitre face of the associated board is also produced. As a result, both the size of the spreading angle enclosed by the two groove flanks and the clearance of the longitudinal groove, as well as the groove depth can be freely chosen and precisely set.
