There is described a coloured, partially stabilised zirconium dioxide ceramic material which contains a chromophoric (colour forming) component and a stabiliser, with the material containing from 0.05 to 15% by weight of zirconium carbide, based on the total weight of the material, the content of free carbon being less than 0.1% by weight and the crystal phase of the zirconium dioxide being composed of tetragonal crystals. This coloured, partially stabilised zirconium dioxide ceramic material is produced by shaping a composition containing from 0.1 to 10% by weight of a chromophoric component, from 90 to 99.9% by weight of zirconium dioxide and a stabiliser to give a shaped body of predetermined form, sintering the shaped body and sintering the sintered body obtained in a carbon atmosphere with formation of a ceramic material containing from 0.05 to 15% by weight of zirconium carbide, in which the crystal phase of the zirconium dioxide is composed of tetragonal crystals. |
