PURPOSE:To provide a liquid crystal display device having a gradation display. CONSTITUTION:This liquid crystal display device consists of a first device 80 consisting of a ferroelectric liquid crystal clamped between two sheets of substrates having electrodes and leads which are wirings, a light transmission plate 83 and diffusion plate 84 disposed between this first device and a light source 81 and a second device 81 consisting of a ferroelectric liquid crystal or a liquid crystal compsn. exhibiting a high-polymer resin and nematic liquid crystal clamped between two sheets of the substrates having the electrodes and the leads which are the wirings. The liquid crystal display device described above is provided with complementary thin-film transistors(TFTs) constituted of P channel type TFTs and N channel type TFTs in order to drive the pixels of the liquid crystal display device.
